Miles Davis - Birdland 1951

Birdland 1951 is a live album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, released in January 27, 2004, by Savoy Records and recorded from February 17, 1951, through September 29, 1951, in Birdland, from radio broadcasts. Three different broadcasts were chosen: two comprising six cuts in total were from June and September and have been issued in various forms on bootlegs over the decades. Four cuts were taken from a broadcast on February 17, which have never been available in any form
Rare lost work by Miles Davis - recordings from 1951 broadcasts from the legendary Birdland nightclub, restored here with surprisingly good fidelity! The recordings are interesting for a number of reasons - first, because the tracks are longer than usual for Miles - certainly longer than some of his shorter LP recordings of the time - and second, because the assortment of players really pushes past the usual suspects.
Seven of the tracks feature a sextet that includes Kenny Drew, Sonny Rollins, JJ Johnson, Tommy Potter, and Art Blakey - and then 3 more tracks feature an even more compelling group that includes Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Billy Taylor, Charles Mingus, Blakey, and the legendary Big Nick Nicholas on tenor! Titles include "Move", "The Squirrel", "Lady Bird", "Out Of The Blue", "Half Nelson", and "Down". And if that's not enough, the CD also features 2 more numbers from an all-star date at Birdland with Jackie McLean and Don Elliott - the titles "Confirmation" and "It Could Happen To You"
